The Outlander Season 5 trailer tells us Roger doesn’t want to remain in the past. Will he leave Brianna behind or sacrifice his happiness for her?

The Outlander Season 5 trailer makes it clear that Roger wants to head back to his own time. That’s not all that surprising considering the original plan. He’s always had it in his mind that he would return. But things have changed and Brianna doesn’t want to leave her family. Will Roger leave without her?

For this post, which marks Day 13 of the 25 Days of MacBree-mas, I’m not even going to look at the books. This is going to be book spoiler-free. Instead, the focus is on the show’s storyline and the chances of Roger heading to the future without the woman he fought so hard to return to.

Why would Roger want to return?

The past is a dangerous world. To be honest, no time period is 100% safe. We only have to look at how technology has made some elements of the world today dangerous or the threats of terror attacks, school shootings, and more. However, the 18th century was a dangerous time period to live in, especially with the growing tension in the Colonies.

Roger has never had the desire to live in the past. He loves to research history, but he’s far more comfortable with his home comforts. Plus, his skills aren’t ones that really translate for life in the past.

In Roger’s mind, he can’t provide for Brianna in the past. He can’t farm, ride a horse well, shoot a gun, or fight. He’s better behind a desk or teaching students. His knowledge of the past is something that makes him, well, him, and he can’t use that in the time period he’s researched!

Plus, we have to remember that in Outlander Season 4, the intention was always to return. He went to the past to find and protect Brianna. Anything could have happened to her, and he couldn’t leave her behind. Even after everything that happened to him, he refused to head through the stones when there was still the chance to get back to Brianna.

Would he ever leave Brianna?

There isn’t a chance that Roger is just going to leave Brianna behind in the past. While he wants to return to his own future, he wants to do it with Brianna. If he was really going to leave her, he would have done it when he got that chance after escaping the Mohawks. He was literally at a set of standing stones and had the chance to return and put it all behind him.

Then at the very end of the season, Roger returned to Brianna. Despite everything that had happened and the knowledge he’d gained about Bonnet, he decided that he could be a father to a child potentially not his. He could love Brianna and the baby whole-heartedly.

These two moments make it clear that it’s all about Brianna. He wouldn’t just walk away from her, especially knowing how dangerous the time is. There’s no way he would leave Jemmy behind.

This isn’t just about Brianna

Roger has a family now. Whether he fully believes Jemmy is his son or not, it’s clear that he’s ready to accept this child is his. There is a chance, after all. And we know the truth now.

There is absolutely no way that Roger would step through the stones and leave everyone else behind. Plus, he wouldn’t take Jemmy and leave Brianna behind. The three come as one now.

He will have moments of doubt and wishes. Roger’s human! However, he’s not just going to leave everyone.
