Many Outlander fans wonder about the age gap between Brianna and Roger. Let’s look at the age gap and what it could mean for their relationship.
On Day 10 of our 25 Days of MacBree-mas, we’re looking at the age gap between Brianna and Roger. As much as we don’t care because we love the relationship, it does play a part throughout Outlander, both books and series.
The age gap isn’t as big as it could be had Brianna grown up in the 18th century. She could have been married off to someone much older, although Claire and Jamie are much more modern than other parents and would have probably avoided an age gap that was too large. However, there is still a fairly large age gap.

Roger was born sometime in 1941. Brianna was born in 1948. That’s a seven-year age gap, which doesn’t sound too big but it will affect some elements of their relationship. It affects their personalities.
Some of the most impressionable years are the teenage ones. Roger’s teenage years were spent during the late 1950s. Brianna became a teenager in the 1960s, when there were more freedoms for women, including access to birth control and more opportunities in the working world. It’s no wonder that Brianna didn’t want marriage, while Roger was still very much set in his need for marriage before sex with the woman he deeply loved.
Their age gap will continue to play a part in the raising of their children. Roger will be used to a more traditional setting. And while Brianna’s upbringing through Frank would have been traditional, her upbringing through Claire would have been anything but. Plus, she will want to bring some of the modern views instilled in her children, despite them potentially remaining in the 18th century.
