Caitriona Balfe only has positive things to say about Outlander Season 5
If you found Outlander Season 4 a little slow in parts, there’s some good news about Season 5. Caitriona Balfe only has positive things to say.
There were mixed opinions about Outlander Season 4, and some fans are understandably worried about Season 5. There’s no reason to be. Not if you believe Caitriona Balfe.
While talking to Entertainment Tonight at TIFF (she was there to promote her upcoming movie Ford v Ferrari), Balfe shared that she believes the season is “strong.” There was a lull in Season 4 for some viewers, but that lull shouldn’t be there moving forward.

The fourth season was a difficult one. It was a transition from Scotland to the Colonies. While we got some of that in the third season with the high seas and the focus in Jamaica, there was always the hope that the family would find their way back to Scotland for some (especially those who hadn’t read the books). Losing some of what made Outlander itself in the earlier seasons made it difficult to move forward for some.
And then there was that feeling of starting again. This season wasn’t just about Claire and Jamie. Moving forward, Brianna and Roger gain more focus and become the secondary couple. Fergus and Marsali will also gain bigger storylines, especially if the show continues in the way that the books have. It’s clear from the cast members at New York Comic-Con 2019 that Murtagh, Jocasta, and Lord John Grey will also get more focus.
Balfe shares that Season 5 is going to be about the consequences of things that happened in the fourth season. However, while that’s the case, the season is more settled. It’s going to be more about family.
With Balfe being a producer this season, along with co-star Sam Heughan, and having more of a say, there’s hope that this season connects more with the fanbase—especially those who came to love the books first.
