10. Discussing things from the future
Kicking off the top 10, it’s all about the things that Claire and Brianna miss from the future. This was just one of those simple moments that meant the world to me. We got the reminder of both being from the present, but also the reminiscing and bonding between them.
Those who have moved countries will know what this bit of reminiscing can be like. You talk about the food that is different and that you miss — I miss black pudding, proper sausages, and real cheese from Britain now that I’ve moved to Canada — and you reminisce on things that you don’t have anymore. This is just what Claire and Brianna are doing, but they know that they’re not heading back through the stones. At least, they don’t think they are.
At the same time, we see them just getting on with their everyday lives. There’s no bitterness or annoyance between them. They’re just having this sweet and friendly moment together and it was something we needed to break up the drama.
9. Putting Brianna first
One of the things that I appreciated about Outlander Season 4 was seeing Claire more as a mother. It was clear she was distant in the 20th century and a lot of that would have been due to Frank, missing Jamie, and a few regrets. Being the 18th century, she was happier and that meant she could be a better mother.
When Brianna came back into her life, Claire was clearly determined to make up for a lot of lost time. She put her daughter first on multiple occasions, which is something I would expect of any parent.
One of those times was when she protected Brianna from Jamie’s anger. Neither Bree or Jamie painted themselves in good lights here, but it’s understandable to me why Claire would side with Brianna. Jamie had accused Bree of lying about the rape to cover up the pregnancy. He questioned her honesty and honor and it was no wonder she was angry at him; no wonder Claire would have been angry at him.
When Bree needed someone in her corner, Claire was there. And I fully appreciated that part of the writing.
