4. Excellent writing throughout

Bevan Lee certainly got an excellent writing team for his series. The characters are well developed and storylines focused on from the very beginning. You immediately feel attached to many of the characters, wanting the best for each of them.

Mysteries are developed in good time. They’re not dragged out — such as why Sarah Adams’ real name is Bridget — with little clues in the lead up to the big reveals. There are just some things to remember about the setting to understand the foreshadowing, such as this is post-World War II Australia, after the Japanese occupation.

3. There’s the meddling matriarch

Who doesn’t love a meddling matriarch? Elizabeth Bligh is the character to watch carefully, as she immediately makes her opinions about people and sticks to them. As she realizes she needs to know more, she’ll do what it takes to find out.

For the other characters, this is annoying. If you love the meddling of the likes of Colum and Dougal MacKenzie or the uncertainty of the Duke of Sandringham and even the watchful eye of Jocasta Cameron, then you’ll definitely love to see what Elizabeth Bligh is up to.

To be honest, I have to bring up another Downton Abbey connection. Elizabeth is very much like Maggie Smith’s character in the British period drama.
