Outlander Season 4: Sophie Skelton reveals cut scene involving Brianna and Phaedre
Like previous seasons of Outlander, Season 4 had to have some scenes cut. One of those showed the stark reality of the past and involved Brianna and Phaedre.
One thing Outlander has never done is shy away from the realities of the past. It’s also something that the source material hasn’t done, although sometimes there are caricatures of the past instead of rounded out characters — the show has helped to develop them. This is something that Season 4 delivered on throughout the whole season.
We got to see slavery at a plantation through the eyes of those from the future. While I get tired of Claire pushing her 20th-century morals without thinking of the repercussions on the people of the time, Brianna took a step back. She didn’t try to fight for others, but she didn’t treat them in the way the people of the time would, either. We also got to see her surprise at the way the white people would talk about the slaves, all because of the color of their skin.

It’s not surprising that Season 4 had scenes cut that had been filmed. This is always the case. One of those involved Brianna and Phaedre, according to Sophie Skelton during the FYC panel earlier this month.
Brianna takes the time to teach Phaedre the alphabet. It would have probably been a lovely scene to show how Bree and Phaedre got to know each other more. Despite being an important part of Jocasta’s life, Phaedre would still have had the upbringing of a slave and wouldn’t have learned to read or write.
Teaching Phaedre would have been a bonding experience for the two. It could have helped to explain the closeness later on in the season — something that suffered because of the lack of time that comes with a 13-episode season.
