Outlander’s first two seasons are heading to Netflix in May. Why is it only the first two seasons? Why not Outlander Seasons 3 and 4 too?
Fans rejoiced hearing that Outlander was finally heading to Netflix U.S. It was something that many never expected to happen but shows that STARZ wants to help as many people see this series as possible. But then we learned it would only be the first two seasons.
Why only the first two seasons? What about Seasons 3 and 4? Well, I don’t think this is because STARZ doesn’t want to risk turning people off like some fans have strangely suggested. Sure, I love the first two seasons more than the second two, but Seasons 3 and 4 aren’t terrible! They’re still a beautiful story and they will eventually end up on Netflix.

So, why not right away? All four seasons are on STARZ, after all.
Well, it all comes down to licensing and STARZ’s need for some exclusivity in the United States. The first two seasons are older, and they begin the story. It makes sense to put these two on Netflix first. There’s a sort of conclusion to the initial tale with the second season finale. The two work together as one long binge so well.
Netflix opens the door to more fans. As people find the show, they’ll want to see if there’s more ot the story somewhere out there. This leads to people turning to STARZ, which could help to boost the subscriptions there for fans to stream Seasons 3 and 4.
While adding Outlander to Netflix U.S. is good for this streaming service and building the fanbase, adding only the first two seasons is an extremely good financial decision for STARZ. Eventually, like elsewhere, the third and fourth seasons will likely be added. When that will be isn’t clear, but I reckon next year the third season will be added to Netflix U.S. at the very least.
