5 best moments from Outlander Season 1, Episode 8
2. Claire learns how to fight
Claire learning how to fight with a weapon was an extremely important part of development. For me, it wasn’t about learning how to fight. It was about the bond that was forming with Angus, Rupert, and the others.
The men were shocked that Claire didn’t know how to defend herself. After weeks of being accused of being a spy, the men had finally warmed to her. Clearly, Dougal had made it clear that Claire was telling the truth — whether he was superstitious or not, the water in that stream two episodes earlier did the trick — and they were happy to have her part of the clan.
And part of the clan was what she was at this point. She had married into the Fraser clan, which made her an ally of the MacKenzies. This moment, teaching her how to fight, showed that.
1. Claire and Frank either side of the stones
There’s a lot of debate over whether Claire and Frank were at opposite sides of the stones at the same time. People wonder whether Frank and Claire actually heard each other. I believe they could.
I believe they got there at the same time and the doorway had opened because Claire was there, and even if Frank couldn’t hear Claire, she could hear him. Otherwise, why would she have been calling out his name?
However, that wasn’t the only reason I adored this moment. It was the buildup and that reminder that Claire was, at one point, trying to get home. Her bond with Jamie had made her forget about this and now she was finding herself torn between two men. I’ve always wondered what Claire’s life would have been like had she gone through the stones on that day.
I know there will be many of you questioning why the end scene wasn’t included. Well, you’ll have to wait to see what one of my top moments of “The Reckoning” is!
