4. Jamie and Claire’s deep bond

Outlander Season 1, Episode 8 gave us some foreshadowing of things to come. Claire and Jamie were getting to know each other better and there was this chance for their bond to deepen. In fact, it was already deepening.

Jamie wanted to know whether what he felt for Claire was normal — is this what she felt for Frank? Definitely not. Claire admits that this isn’t usual, and it’s clear that there’s a little regret or maybe even guilt within her for admitting this.

It is a foreshadow of the choice that Claire would eventually make. She couldn’t imagine leaving this bond behind.

This also led to meeting Hugh Monroe. He was sweet and kind to the two of them, and someone Claire had realized she could trust to get news to Jamie when necessary.

3. Seeing Frank take on the muggers

When Frank gets the chance to speak to someone who may know where Claire is, he jumps at it. Sure, he’s wary, but he is also desperate. He wants to believe that someone knows where his wife is.

Unfortunately, the woman who goes to see Frank is a “Mona Lisa” — a woman who is sent to pray on men and lure them to danger. He was right to be wary of her but he soon finds himself with his life on the line.

This is when we get to see his military training. Frank was MI6 after all. He’d know how to protect himself and was able to take down his attackers. I’ve always been intrigued by Frank’s backstory and personality and it’s something we’ve never really had the chance to delve into. I was really glad “Both Sides Now” gave us a glimpse.
