Outlander Season 5: What’s going on with filming?

Just as it looked like Outlander Season 5 filming had begun, things changed. The cast has only been through script reads so far, so what’s the deal with the filming?

We thought Outlander Season 5 had started filming. Lauren Lyle shared a video of her getting to the Outlander HQ at the end of February and it looked like filming was beginning. And yet, there’s been no filming and the cast and crew are remaining quiet.

So, what’s the deal? Why isn’t there any filming yet? There are a few reasons for the delay.

It looks like the weather may have something to do with it. After all, Richard Rankin has been booking last minute appearances at some of the conventions and is road tripping the States with little plan, suggesting that he thought he might be in Scotland by this time. Other cast members seem to be getting involved in other projects or are in the States for other reasons, while Cesar Domboy was in France and Sam Heughan has been getting ready for his My Peak Challenge gala.

The weather has been up and down in Scotland this year. Considering the show is meant to be in North Carolina now, it’s likely that the production will need to wait for some slightly better weather. So, it’s impossible to tell when filming will start.

We knew that filming wasn’t going to start until sometime early this year. Nobody had ever stated a definite date for filming but the “seven-month” comment had led to many believing Outlander Season 5 would begin filing in February. However, “seven months” was just a ballpark. This delay could have always been planned.

It’s also possible that the sets haven’t been completed as much as they’d wanted. We know the Big House is one of the sets, but there are so many more that would need to be built. Plus, there will be new costumes to make.

Why the secrecy around the date? This is likely more to help keep the first days of filming a little calmer and contained. The last thing they’ll want is a lot of fans crowding around the filming locations. The production team will want to make sure the cast can go straight into work to get the ball rolling.
