International Women’s Day 2019: 5 women in Outlander to gain inspiration from

1. Marsali MacKimmie Fraser

Who she was: Marsali was introduced as someone you’d initially not like. The daughter of Laoghaire MacKenzie MacKimmie Fraser, Marsali grew up seeing her mother unhappy in her marriages. She had a view of the world from her mother’s hardship and potential abuse.

However, she also saw the type of man Jamie Fraser was. He would try to make Laoghaire happy while they were together only for her being unable to let him in. Despite everything, Jamie remained supportive of Marsali and Joanie, taking them in as his own and helping to raise them. Marsali got to see what a good man could be.

Over the last two seasons (well, season and a half by the time Marsali was introduced), we’ve watched her go from a teenager daughter with a preconception of Claire to a woman and mother in her own right. She followed her heart, going her own way, and making her own decisions about people.

Naturally, Marsali didn’t trust Claire but saw the love between Claire and Jamie. She’s had the chance to find happiness and been able to support her family when she needed to. Despite Fergus’ disability, she has loved him for who he is and cared for him physically and emotionally.

Take inspiration from her because: She’s beautiful inside and out. Marsali may have initial misconceptions about people but she will eventually make her own decisions. She is strong-willed and stubborn, but she’s also caring and supportive.

Marsali is willing to think for herself. When Fergus wanted to break Jamie out of jail on the ship, Marsali put her foot down against it but thought of another plan to get Jamie out. When it came to Murtagh, she found a way that would work to avoid her and Fergus getting caught. This is a woman you want by your side and an inspiration this International Women’s Day.
