C- to C+

Starting with the C grades, Outlander Season 4 sees four episodes in this section. Most of them come from the start of the season:

  • “America the Beautiful”  — C-
  • “Do No Harm” — C-
  • “The False Bride” — C
  • “The Deep Heart’s Core” — C+

The first three episodes of Outlander Season 4 didn’t really leave a memorable mark in a positive way. The first two have been my least favorite in a while, with the music at the end of “America the Beautiful” taking me out of everything that was happening on the screen.

While “Do No Harm” didn’t include the music, it did include an insufferable Claire Fraser. I just don’t believe she would have acted as she did. Sure, she doesn’t agree with slavery and I could respect her telling Jamie that she couldn’t own slaves. What I didn’t like was the way she talked to Jocasta, someone who had taken her and Jamie in when they had nowhere else to go.

As for “The False Bride,” I did like the Scottish festival and the cuts between the 18th and 20th centuries, but the episode wasn’t overly memorable. I had to quickly double check what it was about since the title never really stood out — or made sense until you learned it was the title of the song Roger sang.

Finally, “The Deep Heart’s Core” is just one of those average episodes. I’ll admit that I had to double check which episode this was (and it was the one when Brianna learned what had happened to Roger). There were certainly some standout scenes but this is about grading as a whole and it’s just not as strong as some of the other Season 4 episodes.
