21. Murtagh’s declaration of love

When it happened: Season 5, Episode 6

Why it happened: Jocasta was getting ready for her wedding to Duncan Innes the next day when Murtagh turned up in secret. Fans had wondered about their love story, which started in Outlander Season 4. This was Murtagh’s last chance to win Jocasta’s heart and get her to run away with him.

Why it was so romantic: It’s not often we see Murtagh as a romantic type of guy. We know there is the chance considering the tusk bracelets he gave Ellen MacKenzie Fraser, but we’ve never seen him make declarations of love. This was his chance to prove that he is that sort of guy, even though he’s ruggedly handsome and focused on fighting for what he believes is right.

This was Murtagh’s last chance to win Jocasta’s heart. He wanted her to choose him and not Duncan, making it clear that she makes him happy. However, it wasn’t meant to be. It wasn’t that Jocasta didn’t love him with all her heart, but that she had to choose her head.

Jocasta knows what the fight for rights can lose. She lost her daughters because of Culloden, and she won’t go through that heartache again. Nor will she go on the run with him. She opens up in a way that she’s never with anyone else, making our hearts break for her and for Murtagh.
