Outlander Season 4 finale: Inside the World shares almost different ending
Outlander Season 4 finale ended with a cliffhanger not in the books. It was almost very different. The EPs share all in the Inside the World featurette.
There are plenty of debates and thoughts about Outlander Season 4. Many of these debates happen in the show’s writers’ room to ensure this is the right story to tell. One of the debates, though, was about where to end the season. While we got a cliffhanger not in the books, we nearly had something different and the EPs share all in the Inside the World featurette.
The finale ended with Jamie being ordered to create a militia and hunt down Murtagh. While the militia part is in the novels, the hunting down Murtagh isn’t. This puts godson and godfather on opposite sides of the upcoming battles and definitely places them both in a difficult situation. But that nearly wasn’t the ending.

During the Inside the World segment, the EPs shared that they almost left us wondering whether Roger would return. Of course, book fans were ready for Roger not to come back for Brianna. It’s a human response after learning so much information and going through so much horrendous stuff. He’s only human and that reaction was completely justifiable.
Yet, one thing I adored was that it took just a couple of days for Roger to make up his mind. We got that reunion between Brianna and Roger before finding out that Jamie would have to hunt down his godfather. It was a beautiful way to end the series, giving us some sort of positivity for Season 5.
The EPs nearly went with Brianna on the steps of River Run to see only Claire and Jamie return. Sure, this would have been a good cliffhanger had Roger and Brianna’s story not already been written out in the books. If the writers chose to get rid of Roger altogether, it would have also been an intriguing storyline.
But with the future of the series, ending there wouldn’t have made sense and would have dragged out that part of the storyline too long. I’m glad they chose to work with the current ending.
