2. Marsali standing by Fergus

It would have been easy for Marsali to make it clear she had no intention to help Murtagh. In fact, this would have been sensible, protecting her life in Wilmington and keeping her son first. However, she knew it would have been the wrong thing to do.

Fergus made it clear that he couldn’t let Murtagh hang. If it wasn’t for Murtagh’s quick thinking, both of them would have been arrested. Murtagh helped Fergus and now it was time to return the favor.

After a talk, it was clear that Claire and Jamie have rubbed off on Marsali. She made it clear she was standing by her man, knowing she could never see him either arrested to or always wishing he’d saved Murtagh.

1. Roger returning for a merciful death

There is no doubt that the final scene held the strongest moment. Despite wanting to put himself first, this isn’t the type of man Roger is. While you can want something deeply, he knew that he would regret allowing Father Alexandre to suffer for what could be three days. So, he had to go back.

Despite everything that had happened to him, we still got to see Roger as a good man. There may have been the worry that Roger would never accept another child as his, but it’s clear that isn’t the case. Roger will never let someone else suffer, even someone he’d only known for 24 hours or so.

I did also love the discussing in the ‘idiot hut,’ which led to this. Roger got to know Alexandre and saw just how much Alexandre believed in his faith. Whether we agree with Father Alexandre’s sacrifice or not, this was a man who deeply believed in not damning his soul and stuck to his guns, which was an admirable thing to do. Roger saw that in the end and helped make the sacrifice more merciful than it would have been.
