24. Claire killing the red coat

Early into Claire and Jamie’s relationship, it became clear that Jamie would go to any length to keep Claire safe. However, it was a moment in Season 1 where Claire’s bravery was put to the test.

While the lovebirds were taking a break for some lovemaking in the field, they were set upon by two renegade red coats looking for trouble. They ripped Jamie from Claire’s grasp and threatened to slit his throat after watching the men take turns raping Claire.

She was, of course, frozen with fear. Fortunately within seconds, she was able to spring to action. She slid the dirk from her skirt deep into the man, distracting the other long enough for Jamie to break free.

This would be the first time that Claire would kill a man (though it won’t be her last) and it clearly traumatized her. Jamie was also left devastated that he couldn’t protect Claire and that she was put into a position where she had to shed someone’s blood.

This scene became a pivotal talking point in an argument down the road and clearly upset them both. Something about that traumatic moment stays fresh in the fans minds as well.
