13. Fergus’ hand
Poor Fergus has really been through a lot in such a short time.
Fergus (formerly known as Claudel) is a French boy who grew up in a brothel in Paris after being orphaned at a young age. He became an adopted child to Claire and Jamie after he was hired to pickpocket and spy for Jamie. As the relationship progressed, Fergus became loyal to Jamie and he showed that loyalty long after Claire had traveled back through the stones.
At just 15 years old, while on his way to visit Jamie, who was hiding in a cave near Lallybroch, Fergus encounters redcoats. Fergus taunts them, hoping to steer them away from Jamie’s hiding place and tries to get away.
In a small scuffle, one of the soldiers draws his sword and brings it down on Fergus’s wrist, severing his hand clean off. Jamie sees this, but is unable to save the boy from injury and promises to take care of him for life.
Fergus, like the true fighter he is, never falters in his bravery and continues to be by Jamie’s side, even 20 plus years later.
