As we move into two time periods, Roger MacKenzie is back in focus. Here are his top three moments in Outlander Season 4, Episode 3.
Roger MacKenzie is back in some focus on Outlander Season 4, Episode 3. Personally, I found his and Brianna’s storyline a little more entertaining than Claire and Jamies, although certainly adored the whole episode. Roger stood out as a stubborn but an honorable man, who only wants the best for Brianna.
As with the Jamie moments, I’m going to focus on Roger’s top three. After all, with the episodes split half-and-half between the two time periods at the moment, focusing on more would likely include every single scene and that defeats the purpose!
Here are Roger’s three best moments from Outlander‘s “The False Bride” for #ManCrushMonday.
3. The loss of a home
Roger doesn’t have stability, but one place he called home for many a year was the manse. We open the episode in Inverness in 1970 with Roger handing over the keys to Fiona and her man.
This is a beautiful scene. Fiona has met someone who loves her and they’ve making a home together. This gives us that knowledge of what happens to Mrs. Graham’s granddaughter to avoid questions of whether she’s still hung-up on Roger.
It’s also a turning point for Roger. After two years, he’s finally moving on from the manse. This is no longer his and it’s time for him to move onto his venture. But that doesn’t mean he’s fully ready for it. You can see that this place holds plenty of memories for him, good and bad. After saying goodbye to the man who became his father, he’s now saying goodbye to the place that had all those memories of him.

2. The pride of being a MacKenzie
The Clan Call has to stand out as one of Roger’s best moments in “The False Bride.” In the middle of his argument with Brianna, the duty and honor of being a MacKenzie stands out. He is proud of his heritage and proud of the chance to lead the call.
Maybe this is more special because I know what’s coming. It’s leading to him being a MacKenzie, choosing to continue with his own name than “Wakefield,” which was given to him as he was raised by his uncle. This moment stands out, as it’s the first time he’s really shone as a MacKenzie (in Season 3 he was still a Wakefield for many).

However, it shows his honor isn’t just there when it comes to Brianna. He takes his duties seriously and will always perform them to the best of his ability. This is a man who will put a duty first and that’s definitely not something to frown about.

Yet, it was clear that he wished things had come at a better time. You could see that while he was proud to stand up as a MacKenzie, he wanted Brianna by his side as his bride-to-be. He was disappointed that she had said no and that she had left him alone.
Many in TV would give up their duty to race after someone they loved. Considering the situation and life, Roger did what people would do normally. He remained bound to the honor to lead the Clan Call.

1. His stubbornness in the relationship
My heart went out to both Brianna and Roger in Outlander Season 4, Episode 3. Neither was right or wrong in their breakup scene. They both have very different views and wishes, and it drives a wedge between them.
I won’t spoil how this storyline goes for those who haven’t read the books. My focus will be on Roger’s scene with Brianna as he proposes and is turned down. He’s understandably hurt. There’s nothing worse than being turned down during a proposal to hurt a man’s pride.
However, it’s what came after that was one of Roger’s best moments. He remained stubborn in his wish to marry Brianna. He didn’t want to take the relationship further if Brianna didn’t love him in the same way that he loved her. It wouldn’t be right.
Sure, Roger has had other women in his bed, but as he pointed out in the episode, he didn’t love them. He’s an old-fashioned man when it comes to love and marriage. It’s not that Brianna is a virgin, but that he wants to do right by her. He wants to make her his bride before sleeping with her.
To be honest, I got the feeling that he wanted to know she wanted to be his wife before sleeping with her. Had Brianna said yes, I reckon that night would have gone the way Brianna wanted. Not that I blame Brianna for saying no — and I’ll get to that on Wednesday when I come to Brianna’s best moments.
Roger is an honorable man and it shows in this scene with Brianna. Can the two work it out?
