20. The night Jamie took Claire to safety

When it happened: Season 2, Episode 13

Any tension between Claire and Jamie? This wasn’t really tension but despair at the situation unfolding around them.

Why it’s the best: From the wedding to the moment the two parted temporarily. As the Battle of Culloden loomed, Jamie knew that he had to make sure his wife and unborn child were safe. So, he got her to the stones and encouraged her to go to the future; to Frank.

The two had a beautiful, loving, and heartbreaking goodbye. Jamie made it clear that he just wanted to keep the people he loved safe. He’d already shown that by giving up his inheritance and that of his child (already secretly knowing Claire was pregnant at this point) to keep Jenny and her family safe. Now he was sacrificing his happiness to get Claire to a better time; a safer time.

But that wasn’t all that made this special. Jamie made it clear that he’d kept an eye on Claire and on her monthly cycles. He knew she was pregnant long before Claire was ready to tell him. Knowing he was sending her to let another man raise his child showed the sacrifice he was willing to make. It showed just how much he loved Claire and we loved him even more.

Of course, Claire didn’t want to go. She wanted to be there for Jamie, knowing that if she left, he wouldn’t likely fight for survival. She couldn’t lose him.
