10. Discussing the wedding contract

When it happened: Season 1, Episode 6

Any tension between Claire and Jamie? This wasn’t really tension between them but tension at the situation. The last thing Claire wanted was to marry.

Why it’s the best: After being saved from Black Jack Randall’s interrogations by Dougal, Claire needed a way to avoid being sent to Fort William. Dougal had an option but it wouldn’t be one that Claire would like. It meant marriage and there was a perfect candidate for Dougal’s need; Jamie.

As Claire looked over the wedding contract, Jamie paid her a visit. The two had a chance to talk through it and Claire learned more about why Jamie was willing to go through it. This was a moment that led to more secrets being revealed and more of an understanding between the two.

The best part was definitely the virgin comment. Who would have thought Jamie was a virgin—without reading the books first? Claire certainly didn’t expect it and you could see that look on her face. But Jamie’s retort about one of them knowing what they were doing was perfect and broke some of that tension. Of course, it also helped lead to the belief they would do it like horses.
