15. Jamie gives Claire the new ring

When it happened: Season 4, Episode 6

Any tension between Claire and Jamie? No real tension. They’d not had the chance to spend a lot of time with each other as previously Jamie had been in Wilmington and during the episode Lord John Grey had measles, meaning Jamie took Willie away to avoid catching it.

Why it’s the best: Claire and Jamie finally had their home together. They were settling on the Ridge, but other people didn’t help matters. In Episode 6, Lord John Grey had shown up with Willie, putting pressure on Claire and Jamie. However, all things were made right in the end.

Once John had healed from the measles and hte two were on their way, Claire and Jamie managed to get some alone time — something that was evident they hadn’t had for weeks. Jamie bathed his wife and then surprised her with something: a new wedding ring. While it would have brought back memories of the ring that had been stolen, it was also a beautiful moment knowing the effort Jamie had put into getting the ring made. In the previous episode, we’d seen him heading out to the silversmith to get the ring made from one of Ellen Fraser’s candle holders.

This was one of those moments from the book that had been missing. The permanent ring with the message had been given a lot earlier in the book series and many book fans wondered whether we were ever going to get it. The placement of the gift was just perfect, especially the reason it came about. After all, not just any silversmith created the ring from the candle stick hold. Murtagh did it.
