23. Ratched

Number of seasons: 1 (so far)

Who it stars: Sarah Paulson, Finn Wittrock, Cynthia Nixon, Jon Jon Briones, Charlie Carver, Judy Davis, Sharon Stone, Corey Stoll, Sophie Okonedo

What it’s about: Ratched is a prequel of sorts to One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, offering an origin tale for Nurse Mildred Ratched. It brings to life what the world of psychiatric hospitals was like in 1947, including the barbaric treatments designed to “help” patients.

Of course, there is one major storyline playing out throughout the first season. Nurse Ratched has managed to con her way into a job at Lucia State Hospital, but why? What does it have to do with “The Priest Killer?”

Why watch it: There are many reasons to check out Ratched as a fan of Outlander. The main one is that it is set in 1947 and follows a nurse. While not the exact time period or role that Claire Randall would have done in 1960s Boston, it still gives an idea of the role of medicine in the past.

There’s also an outstanding cast to follow. Ratched isn’t the only strong-willed, conniving woman on the show. Nurse Bucket, Dolly, and Gwendoline all have their roles to play in the overall story. And then there’s Sophie Okonedo’s Charlotte to watch out for.

While it is created by Ryan Murphy, the man behind American Horror Story, there isn’t the gore that you would expect from him. It’s not a traditional horror series, giving us the backstory on how Nurse Mildred Ratched became the woman she is in One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest.
