14. The Queen’s Gambit

Number of seasons: 1

Who it stars: Anya Taylor-Joy, Chloe Pirrie, Bill Camp, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Harry Melling

What it’s about: Based on the book of the same name, The Queen’s Gambit follows orphan and chess prodigy Beth. She focuses her efforts on becoming the greatest chess player of her time in a game where women don’t usually succeed.

However, at the same time, she has to face her own mental health problems. Addiction is one of them.

Why watch it: The series is beautifully filmed and excellently written. It’s one of those that is going to stand the test of time, while showcasing so many excellent actors.

This is more than just a show about a female chess player. It’s one of self-growth and of finding your place in the world. It’s one of struggle and overcoming problems. We can all take away something from the series.

For Outlander fans, there’s also the period drama element. The Queen’s Gambit is set during the Cold War, so while not Claire and Jamie’s time, it is set in Claire, Bree, and Roger’s time. There are some stunning sets and costumes.

The only downside to The Queen’s Gambit is that it’s just the one season. It’s billed as a miniseries, and it looks like it is staying that way.
