As fans of Drums of Autumn likely expected, Outlander Season 4 will see different character storylines build. However, you can still expect the overall focus to be on Claire and Jamie.

Outlander Season 4 is going to step into territory not really covered in the first three seasons. Side characters are going to start gaining more of a storyline. This is something “Drums of Autumn” fans have expected and it did start to happen in the Season 2 finale and the third season.

The good news for the Claire and Jamie fans out there is that the show isn’t going to move away from them too much. You can tell from the promotional materials that the two will remain a strong focus because, at the end of the day, it is their story.

While books get away with introducing other characters and telling tales from other perspectives, it’s much harder for a show. Fans become connected to individual characters on the screen. When a main character leaves, it’s often very hard to keep the fan base and build another character.

Vikings has managed it, but there are still many longing for Ragnar Lothbrok to return. Suits is fairing well this season based on fan reaction on social media. However, shows like 8 Simple Rules (although under very different circumstances) and The Vampire Diaries struggled. So it wouldn’t be in Outlander‘s best interest to run the risk of taking a lot of the story from Claire and Jamie with that in mind.

Outlander Season 4 will see other perspectives though. This is the season that Brianna and Roger get more of a focus. Marsali and Fergus will also start getting more of a storyline and become integral in Claire and Jamie’s lives. Then there’s Lord John Grey who will become more important and get some of his own storylines.

This season is going to be a good chance to build on the characters. It will give fans time to get to know more without feeling like they’re losing the story on the characters they want to see. This could then help expand the perspectives for the fifth and sixth season, and beyond.
