Matt B. Roberts hints Murtagh is definitely coming back for Outlander Season 4

When Murtagh was saved from death on the battlefield, fans questioned what that meant for the future. Would Murtagh return for Outlander Season 4. If so, how? Well, Matt B. Roberts has some hints.

Outlander made a huge change to one particular character in the third season. After dying in the books, many expected Murtagh to face the same fate in the series. However, the showrunners chose to save the character and keep it. That led to questions about how he could be used in Outlander Season 4.

Then executive producer Toni Graphia hinted that the character may not even be back. It does seem a waste not to have a character saved never return again. Surely it would have made more sense just to stick to the original story, then. It wasn’t surprising to hear Outlander showrunner Matt B. Roberts hint that Murtagh would be back for the fourth season.

The tease was included in the bonus spoiler section of TVLine’s fall 2018 spoilers. Roberts explained that Murtagh was saved for a reason. While this doesn’t outright state that he’ll be back in Outlander Season 4, it’s certainly a good tease. And it does follow the theory that everything has to happen for a reason.

Bringing Murtagh back for Outlander Season 4 makes sense. Claire and Jamie are now in the Colonies, which was where Murtagh had headed off to as an indentured servant when Ardsmuir Prison closed down. Jamie was the only one saved from that fate.

Some fans suspect that Murtagh will take Duncan Innes’ position from “Drums of Autumn.” While that’s possible, it’s also possible that he’ll get his own storyline. This is just something we’ll have to wait and see, but it certainly seems like Murtagh will be in the fourth season.
