Season 4 filming may have only just wrapped, but we’re all looking forward to Outlander Season 5. One of the big questions is whether Diana Gabaldon will return as a scriptwriter.

Diana Gabaldon isn’t penning one of the Season 4 scripts. It’s disappointing, but as the author of the novels, she doesn’t have the time. Scriptwriting takes up a lot of hours in the day, working with the whole writing team and the showrunners to create something that works for the whole TV series as a whole. She also didn’t pen a script in Seasons 1 or 3. However, she may step back into the scriptwriting shoes for Outlander Season 5.

Bleeding Cool chatted to Gabaldon while at the Saturn Awards, where she was able to share whether she’d pen a script or not. The scriptwriting process will begin soon, after all, so this is the time to ask the question.

The good news is she’s open to penning a script. It also sounds like the showrunners are open to her writing one of the scripts too. However, she’s not been given (or asked to write) an episode yet. It’s all about timing and Gabaldon is one very busy lady.

There’s something a little more important that she’s working on; something that the novel fans would prefer she make her main priority. That is the ninth novel in the series, “Go Tell the Bees that I Am Gone.” She’s even turning down convention appearances to make sure she has enough time to work on the novel. It’s nowhere near finished yet, but she’s getting through a good amount of it. If her schedule allows and she’s through enough of the novel by the time the Outlander Season 5 script writing starts, she’ll take on a script.

This is the same answer she gave a few months ago. She’s always made it clear that the novels come first for her. After all, without the novels, there won’t be more seasons of the series. She won’t let happen what has happened to Game of Thrones.
