Game of Thrones is at the point where the show is ahead of the books. Will that be the case for Outlander? Diana Gabaldon promises not!

Game of Thrones book fans are in a strange territory. For the last two seasons, the show has been ahead of the books. Rather than the show taking a break for George R.R. Martin to finish the book series, they’ve continued on and that will remain the case for the eighth and final season to be released next year. Diana Gabaldon promises that she won’t do a Martin. She’s not going to let that happen.

To be honest, for Gabaldon’s Outlander story, the idea of getting ahead of the books is much further off. Claire and Jamie’s story is already up to the eighth book and Gabaldon is currently working on the ninth. It’s not clear when that book will come out yet, but it’s possibly going to be next year at the earliest. Maybe Gabaldon will surprise us with a late addition this year.

Either way, the show has to get through five seasons to catch up with the ninth book–and that’s including the season that is still to air in November 2018. Starz has only ordered another two seasons, taking us to Outlander Season 6 at the most right now. It’s going to take time to get to a ninth season.

Of course, this is assuming the show will continue with the current pattern. There are talks every year about whether to stick to one book per season. This could change with the fifth and sixth seasons. The showrunners could choose to cover half a book with a season or even join two books together.

The topic came up in the comments section on a Facebook post about the renewal of Outlander for Seasons 5 and 6. A fan asked Gabaldon if she would “do a George” and she replied “not a chance.” We’re all holding you to it, Diana!
