Outlander producer Barry Waldo explains what happens when a star is sick
Actors get sick. That’s just the way of life. But how does that work when they’re meant to be filming a scene for Outlander?
When we get sick, many of us will take a day off work. Some of us will have to struggle through at work or still deal with parenting, but we try to get as much rest as possible. Humans get sick and that’s just the way of the world, but what happens when an Outlander star is sick?
Barry Waldo, a producer on the set, shared the answer. It’s an interesting one, especially since Caitriona Balfe has previously shared that she and co-star Sam Heughan get sick a lot but still have to work.
Waldo explained that the showrunners attempt to make allowances and look at other scenes that can be shot. Is it possible to work on a different set for the day, giving the actor a chance to recover?

Of course, that’s not always possible. There are times that the scenes are too crucial to miss out. Recently that was the case for Balfe, who had to fly straight back to Glasgow the day of the London Marathon to shoot scenes the next day. While she jokingly posted a photo on Twitter to say she was unhappy, she honestly didn’t seem that annoyed. It was just the way that scheduling works.
Balfe and Heughan are the main stars of the show. The majority of the scenes have at least one of them in. This could change for Outlander Season 4 and beyond. In fact, it likely will change. There is going to be more focus on the likes of Brianna Randall Fraser and Jenny Murray. There are scenes set in Scotland when the Frasers are across the Atlantic in the Colonies. Maybe Balfe and Heughan won’t have to work all the time anymore.
