Diana Gabaldon has taken to Twitter to thank her fans for their warm birthday wishes.

Diana Gabaldon, author of the epic time-travelling, fantasy, love story between Claire and Jamie, turns 66 today. The official Outlander Twitter certainly got it right by saying without her there would be no show. The series has been adapted based on the novels, which the birthday girl is still creating.

Gabaldon originally created the novel as a test for herself. She wanted to get the story out there, proving to herself that she could complete it. There wasn’t the intention at the time to publish it, nor was there the initial thought of turning it into a (so far) eight-book series with companions and novella spin-offs.

The characters have certainly come to life. Fans from around the world have flocked to the series, whether through the love of the books from 20 years ago or because they’ve found the series on Netflix. Each month the show grows in further popularity, especially now that Creation has picked it up for an Outlander-only convention with the past and current stars of the series.

Fans have taken to social media to share their well-wishes for Gabaldon. Many affectionately refer to her as Herself. This stems from the books, as Gabaldon has always referred to Colum MacKenzie was Himself. It’s a badge of honor given to the book series creator.

Gabaldon is currently working on the ninth book in the series, “Go Tell the Bees I Am Gone.” The series will pick up off the back of the last novel, focusing more on Claire, Jamie, Brianna, Marsali, Fergus and more. She says there will be a 10th book, but that will likely be the last. This will bring the story full circle, with an explanation of Jamie (yes, it’s definitely Jamie) looking up at Claire’s window in 1946 (45 in the US edition) Scotland.
