At the end of every year, awards for Top Actress, Top Actor and Top Showrunner are handed out at CarterMatt and Outlander fans rallied together to win.
It’s not often one show can take the main three awards, but Outlander has done it. Fans rallied together on social media to make sure their show’s EP was crowned Top Showrunner at the CarterMatt Awards. On top of that, both Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe were awarded Top Actor and Top Actress of the year.
The awards season is a tricky one to navigate. Some of the greatest actors and actresses can be overlooked because there are better contenders in other shows. Sam Heughan has missed out on a Golden Globe nomination because of that very matter, even though he proved time and time again in Outlander season 3 that he is worthy of a nod.

While fans have complained, they’ve also voted with their feet—or in this case, their hands. The CarterMatt Awards are voted by the public and the fans of the show rallied together to make sure the main three categories were won by their own.
The final results were announced on Dec. 28 for all three categories.
Top Actor: Sam Heughan
There’s no doubt that fans were annoyed at Heughan’s snub at both the Critics’ Choice Award and the Golden Globe Award nominations. That may have something to do with so many people voting for him in the CarterMatt Awards. He walked away with 61% of the voting in the end. Second place’s Lee Pace from Halt and Catch Fire only secured 22% of the vote!
This was definitely not a close showdown. Even without being an Outlander fan, it’s easy to see why Heughan has won the hearts of fans. Not only is he good looking, but he has proven time and time again that he is an excellent actor. The season 3 premiere stole the show, when he portrayed everything with just his expressions and memories.
Top Actress: Caitriona Balfe
This was one of those categories that was extremely close towards the end, with the winner jumping back and forth while fans voted. In the end 50,000 votes were cast for people’s favorite actress (people could vote multiple times) and Outlander’s Caitriona Balfe took the top spot.
Balfe was behind at first. However, fans took to Facebook groups to encourage others to vote to make their voices hear. Balfe secured the award within the last couple of days of voting.
Top Showrunner: Ronald D. Moore
Like with Balfe’s win, this was a close race and Moore only secured it in the end. Fellow Starz showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Greene (for American Gods) were frontrunners for the award at one point. In the end, Moore took it with 43% of the total vote.
There is certainly no denying that he deserves the win. It’s also fitting since he’s taking a small step back in season 4, allowing Matthew B. Roberts to take more control over the series.
Who will win Best Show?
There’s still one award that Outlander can realistically win. That’s the Best Show of 2017. You can still vote until Dec. 31. So far, the fandom is rallying together strongly, as the show is currently in first place with 88% of the vote. It’s going to take a lot for another show to take over.
However, don’t get complacent. Remember you can vote as many times as you want to make sure your favorite show comes out on top!
