Jamie may have been arrested at the end of the last episode, but he’s returning for the Outlander season 3 finale.

Many fans groaned as Jamie Fraser was arrested yet again. Not only is he being accused of murder, but of sedition and treason. It’s not looking good for the former Laird, but he will likely have a guardian angel looking over his shoulder. After all, the one single promo photo for the episode shows Jamie and Claire together in a cave.

This isn’t that surprising. The promo footage for the Outlander season 3 finale also showed Jamie back in the action with Claire. He wouldn’t let something like arrest by the British get in the way of finding Young Ian, would he? There would be no need, considering the friend of his who is now the Governor of Jamaica.

Lord John will likely use his influence

One of the biggest theories is that Lord John will help to get Jamie out of prison. He’d be able to use his knowledge of Jamie Fraser at Ardsmuir Prison to help either convince people that Jamie and Alexander Malcolm aren’t the same person or that he knows Jamie had to have been framed. Either that or he will just make sure to pay Captain Leonard off, with the promise of a promotion in the near future, for letting Jamie go.

It would be very easy for a man in Lord John’s position to help Jamie escape. And he would do it, especially knowing that Jamie’s nephew is somewhere on the island. John loves Jamie and he would do anything for him.

Will the writers stop using this plot device?

In all honestly, arresting Jamie to separate him from Claire is starting to wear thin. They can’t do anything without the Redcoats turning up. Jamie is questioned in the books but never officially arrested and the storyline of Claire and Jamie out in the woods when Jamie is arrested has been adapted purely for the TV series.

It’s time for the writers to come up with a new plot device. If they really need to separate them, do something original—or stick to the separation storylines in the book if running out of ideas. At least this one is easy for Jamie to get out of, but the next time won’t likely be realistically possible.
