Outlander ratings: Total viewership sees 4-week high
The Outlander ratings from Week 12 are out and the show is on the up again.
“The Bakra” unsurprisingly drew a few wayward fans back into Outlander. The ratings both in the demographic and total viewership saw a jump, with the total viewership seeing its highest amount in the last month. This is excellent news going into the season finale on Sunday.
The demographic jumped up by 11.54% on Sunday, with a 0.29 rating. However, it’s the total viewership that shows the most positivity. It jumped to 1.51 million viewers, which is the highest since November 5’s episode “First Wife.” It’s also higher than both the season premiere and the second episode of the season.
Fans haven’t been overly happy with the way the season has gone. There have been a number of large changes to the books, so it’s not that surprising some fans dropped off after “First Wife.” Many wanted to know just how much would change in “The Bakra,” especially since the Campbells and Yi Tien Cho’s storyline had changed so dramatically in earlier episodes. This was also the episode of certainly characters returning, which book fans were excited about seeing play out on screen.
Lowish key demographic ratings possibly isn’t that surprising. The key demographic is 18-49 years olds, but there are many older than that following the series. In fact, a look at the Facebook fan groups will tell you that there are a lot of fans 50+, because they’re the ones who fell in love with the books first. They were the ones that waited decades for the TV series to finally be created.
The increase in total viewership is good for two reasons. The first is that it hints at another increase next week. It will be the season finale that that usually means an increase for any show. This will be the last episode of the show until somewhere around September next year. Strong ratings also help with renewal talks. Sony and the showrunners are already in talks for season 5 renewal (since season 4 is already confirmed) to avoid another long Droughtlander.
Starz doesn’t necessarily watch all the live ratings, though. It’s worth remembering that the new episodes are available from midnight Sunday before the episode airs at 8 p.m. EST. The network relies heavily on subscriptions to the app. If they remain strong (and there are plenty who cancel their subscription after the finale and renew before the premiere to show Starz just what they’re interested in) then there is an excellent chance that the show will be renewed for season 5.
