There are just four episodes left of Outlander Season 3. While “The Doldrums” was a relatively tame episode compared to previous ones, it ended with a cliffhanger. Claire was stuck on a disease-ridden ship, with the only option to sail to Jamaica and hope she can be reunited with Jamie once again. The promo and synopsis for Episode 10, “Heaven & Earth,” have been released. Here are the top takeaways from the two.
Claire locates the source of the disease
Claire quickly diagnosed all those onboard the British ship as having typhoid fever. The bacterial disease can kill up to 30% of patients, but not all will show symptoms. Many become carriers of the disease, passing it onto others. It appears that’s what is happening on the ship and the carrier of the disease is the person serving the food. It’s no wonder that everyone is getting sick very quickly.

During the episode Claire will locate the source of the disease. She needs to get the acting captain and other crewmen on side to take down the cook, who clearly has no interest in a female surgeon. Will she succeed in slowing down the spread of the infection?
Jamie resorts to bargaining
When pushed against a wall, Jamie will resort to bargaining for what he wants. In this episode, it’s going to be bargaining with Fergus. After learning Captain Raines agreed to the British ship sailing away with Claire, Jamie kicks up a fuss and starts to fight back. Quite honestly that doesn’t make much sense since they are both going in the same direction, but overlooking that it does make a dramatic storyline.
Jamie is taken below deck and put in chains for the crews’ safety. However, Jamie is desperate to get free, so he offers Fergus a deal. If Fergus gets him out of the chains, Jamie will bless the union between Fergus and Marsali. That’s a mean deal, since it will make Fergus choose between the ship’s captain and his love for his handfasted wife.
The British captain will believe Claire
Most of the time, Claire has to argue her case for action to be taken. It doesn’t look like that is going to happen on the British ship. After telling the ship’s captain that the disease is being spread by the cook, the captain just hopes that she is right.
This likely isn’t a turning point for how men view women. The captain is just young and doesn’t know enough about medicine. Claire is already proving herself to be a strong and capable doctor, so he will put his trust in her about this. If she’s wrong, there will be trouble.
Captain Raines will put the safety of the crew first
It’s not that surprising that Jamie is getting restrained onboard the Artemis. He’s threatening the captain, despite the two ships heading to the same location. There isn’t anything Jamie can do, but whatever he does try will likely put the people onboard the ship in danger. The captain has already proven that he puts the interest of the crew majority first, so restraining Jamie just proves that.
