May 30 is a big day for Outlander fans. It’s the anniversary of the first season finale, but this one is extra special. It’s been 10 years since we watched the Outlander season 1 finale.
Titled “To Ransom a Man’s Soul,” this episode picked up off the back of Claire’s attempts to rescue Jamie while he was at Wentworth Prison. It was a dark episode, as Claire dealt with the after effects of being saved, as Jamie had readied himself to die.
A look back on the Outlander season 1 finale
During the episode, we learned what had happened to Jamie while he was trapped in Wentworth. Claire had tried to save him in the previous episode, but she was kicked out and needed to use the help of others to find a way in. It ended with the brilliance of Claire telling Black Jack Randall when he would die.
However, Jamie had been to hell and back, and it was clear that Claire wouldn’t just need to mend Jamie’s hand that have been broken due to a hammer to it. She would also need to save his soul, as he contemplated taking his own life. After all, he was ready to give himself over to Black Jack in the knowledge that he would die afterward and not have to live with that pain and trauma.

Outlander season 2 was already in the bag
The great thing going into this episode was the knowledge that there would be a second season. That news had come a year earlier on Aug. 15, 2014. In fact, it came just a week after the premiere of the series, making it clear that this was a series STARZ knew it could count on.
It meant the somewhat cliffhanger ending of the Outlander season 1 finale wasn’t too bad. The downside was Droughtlander, as we had to wait for the second season to finish filming and get through post-production. At least that Droughtlander was nothing compared to alter ones.
Since then, we’ve had seven seasons of the series, and the eighth and final season is in progress. There will also be a spinoff series, Outlander: Blood of My Blood. All of this started with a collection of books that fans had devoured one by one, and now we have an entire universe both in terms of books and TV series.
Outlander is available to stream on STARZ and Netflix.
