Lord John Grey had to think on his feet in Outlander season 7, episode 13. That led to him coming up with the alias Bertram Armstrong.
At the end of the previous episode, Lord John Grey escaped the enemy camp. It was with Denny’s help, and it’s clear that Denny hasn’t been caught up in that mess, which was something John worried about. We caught up with where Lord John Grey was at the end of Outlander season 7, episode 13 to find the enemy find him.
Fortunately, this wasn’t the same enemy as the one who shackled him in the first place. It meant John was able to come up with a story to protect himself and potentially get back home. When they asked for a name, it didn’t take John too long to come up with an alias.
Who is Bertram Armstrong in Outlander?
John said that his name is Bertram Armstrong. Hey, it sounds like a very 1778 name, and it works for an Englishman. Nobody from the Continental Army questioned it, which suggests that it could very much be a real name.
Well, that’s because it is. Lord John’s full name is actually John William Bertram Armstrong Grey. Like Jamie, John has simply used two of his middle names to pass as his alias. Remember how Jamie would go by the name Alexander Malcolm—or A. Malcolm, the Printer.
Armstrong is actually John’s mother’s maiden name. Men of the time would have both the maiden and the married name, as we know with Jamie’s full name being James Alexander Malcolm MacKenzie Fraser. It was the done thing in the time period.
What will happen to Lord John Grey in Outlander?
We’re not getting into the book spoilers in this post, but I will say that so far, this storyline is following the books. Yes, John chooses the same name when a group from the Continental Army finds him in the woods.
John will need to hope that nobody from the previous group find him, or his cover is completely blown. What’s more likely is Jamie, Young Ian, or Denny finding Lord John Grey with the Americans. Jamie has been called to action, and that will mean Young Ian is called as well. Denny will need to get ready to treat the wounded when they come in. One thing is clear, all three could end up with the camp.
As Young Ian is the scout, it’s more likely to be him. He’ll have more connection to various battalions and groups to pass on messages. We also know there was a bit in the Outlander season 7 trailer with John and Young Ian. John had the eyepatch and they were in the woods. Young Ian is sure to look out for John, not having the same anger toward him as Jamie and being able to vouch somewhat for the man to get him home.
