With so few major deaths on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, we knew that at least one had to happen during the Trial by Seven. The only character we knew could survive was Dunk, and that’s just because the story is all about him.

Would both sides lose good men? Would it all be one-sided, leaving us to fear the worst for our favorite hedge knight? In the end, the fight was a big one — although there was way too much time spent on the story in the past — and it meant some heavy losses. One in particular is sure to have some major consequences.

All the deaths were on Dunk’s side on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

There were three deaths during the Trial of Seven. Two of them were early on in the fight, and they weren’t heavily shown on the screen. We learned about them from Raymun at the end, who shared that the two Humfreys, Hardyng and Beesbury, died. Beesbury died at the beginning of the whole thing, so it was very much a mercy for him.

It was the third death that would have major consequences. At first, it looked like Prince Baelor was fine, and that he had just taken a small blow to the head. As he had his helmet removed, it was clear that the injury from his brother’s mace was much more serious than he believed. We could see most of the back of his head was crushed in, and there was no surviving that.

What does Baleor’s death mean for Dunk?

In some good news, Baelor’s death won’t be blamed on Dunk. However, Dunk will likely blame himself for it, considering Baelor went up against Maekar for him. At the same time, Maekar is sure to blame himself for his brother’s death, knowing that it was his mace that did it. However, despite all this, we shouldn’t see Maekar want to see Dunk brought to justice for this, because there is no justice to bring.

However, it’s unlikely that Dunk will get the chance to serve the Targaryens. One of his dreams was to prove himself as a knight to have the Targaryens take him in, but how can they do that knowing how Baelor died?

There is the topic of Egg, though. It’s clear that Dunk could be good for Egg, and there’s no doubt that Egg needs to learn how to be a good man, and not just a Targaryen prince. Could this be the start of their journey now that Dunk has, arguably, proven himself as a knight, although he isn't really one?

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms airs on Sundays at 10/9c on HBO and HBO Max.
