As one show ends, the PBS schedule is taken up with another series. In some bad news, Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light has come to an end. The story ends with the end of Thomas Cromwell. However, there is another series taking over the time slot, and it’s another period drama. Get ready for Miss Austen.
This is a four-part series, which is a mixture of period drama and romance. It’s going to be excellent for fans of other similar shows, such as Outlander and Miss Scarlet.
What is Miss Austen about?
You know of Jane Austen, but that’s not who this series is going to focus on. Instead, the focus is on her sister, Cassandra, although Jane will be included in the series. It is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Andrea Gibb, and it is a fictionalized version of events from real life.
In life, Cassandra Austen burned the letters that her sister Jane wrote to her friend Eliza. It’s a mystery that has never been solved in real life, and it’s actually heartbreaking when you look at what it meant for Jane and Cassandra’s relationship. Why did it happen, though?
It’s 1830, and we get to learn why it happened and what Cassandra was trying to do. There’s an intimacy to the story, as we learn it all from Cassandra’s point of view. We also need to see Cassandra find the letters and understand more about her relationship with her sister.
The series takes place in two timelines. We have an older Cassandra, played by Keeley Hawes, as she tells the story and suffers from illness. Then we have a younger Cassandra, as we watch how the events play out.
Miss Austen airs on Sundays at 9/8c on PBS.
