We met Mrs. Fitz in the Outlander series premiere, and she became the first person to make Claire feel welcome. However, once Claire left Leoch, she didn’t get to see Mrs. Fitz again. What happened to the character after Culloden?
We’ll get to see Mrs. Fitz again in the prequel series Outlander: Blood of My Blood. This is going to be a chance to see who the housemaid to Ellen MacKenzie grew up to become the formidable Mrs. Fitz, who certainly knew how to run the kitchen and the staff at Leoch. It won’t tell us anything about the post-Culloden life, though.
Little is known about Mrs. Fitz post-Culloden in Outlander
We don’t get to know much about any of the characters after Culloden in the Outlander books or the show. Castle Leoch stopped functioning as a traditional castle, with the MacKenzies fleeing for Nova Scotia. That’s where Hamish ends up, staying out of trouble as Scotland was decimated by the British Army.
Mrs. Fitz likely didn’t go with them. Instead, she likely went back to her own village, focusing on her family. We know that Laoghaire ends up growing up with a house of her own, but there’s never an explanation of how that happens, but it’s likely via deaths of family members.
Mrs. Fitz probably didn’t survive the post-Culloden landscape for too long. It was a harsh life, with a lot of famine and sickness. There’s a chance that she suffered from an illness that killed her, because she would have certainly known how to make the most of whatever scraps she could get in the kitchen.

Hamish mentions the deaths of many people from Leoch in Outlander
In the Outlander books, Hamish is seen again, and he catches us up on some of the post-Culloden events. We know that around half of the people who lived at Leoch died in the aftermath, and that could have included Mrs. Fitz.
If she did survive, she would have likely gone to Cranesmuir, as that’s where she already had some family. She may have also been taken in by Laoghaire, who would have turned to marriage for survival around that time.
With no mention of her, it becomes pure speculation. I would love for a little mention somewhere of Mrs. Fitz in Outlander. The prequel series isn’t going to give us the answers, but it will at least give us a younger version of a beloved character.
Outlander: Blood of My Blood premieres on Friday, Aug. 8 on STARZ.
