Just when you think things couldn’t get any crazier, they do in Virgins section 5. Jamie learns that he probably wants to die in an attack rather than be “helped” by the surgeon.
The surgeon is also the chaplain, and he’s also blind. That sounds like a great mixture! I have to wonder about these mercenaries, and so does Jamie.
Breaking down Virgins section 5
Jamie wakes up while the priest is trying to give Jamie absolution. You see, the priest was certainly not expecting Jamie to make it through the injuries he’s sustained, and he wouldn’t be the first to count Jamie out. A lot of people thought he would have died from the lashings; let alone the most recent attack.
Ian explains that the priest is blind, so not to mind him. However, the have to, because it turns out that priest is also the surgeon. Erm, they have a blind surgeon? It’s no wonder Jamie immediately takes to Claire healing him when she comes through the stones! He’s seen much worse than a female healer!
Jamie mentions that he needs to make sure that he dies of a wound in battle, because he won’t survive the surgery by a blind man.
While all this happens, one of the attackers starts to stir from his injuries. This could be a great chance to find out why the attackers attempted to rob the wagon. What exactly were they after?
Could this section be used in a TV series adaptation?
The idea of the priest being the surgeon and also being blind just seems so ludicrous that we would need to see this section play out. I would need to see Jamie’s reaction to learning all of this from Ian, and I would want to see the look on Ian’s face as he’s telling his friend all of this. There’s so much that can be said between looks.
This is also important as we get to see how tough Jamie is. People are quick to rule him out at this age. Of course, not later in life, but he’s still young and inexperienced, so to see that it’s just a trait of his is important to show in a TV adaptation.
