Outlander Book Club: Virgins section 31 breakdown

Jamie is a man on a mission in Virgins section 31. Here's our breakdown of the section.

Outlander season 1

It feels like Jamie is a man with something to prove in Virgins section 31. However, is that really his intention.

Meanwhile, Ian has something for Jamie on his mind. It turns out that Jamie doesn’t have a sword of his own, and I have to admit that I’m surprised by that. I’m also surprised that I didn’t really consider it up to this point.

Breaking down Virgins section 31

After leaving Dr. Hasadi, Ian thinks about how the captain is going to take the entire situation. While the doctor seems to be okay with the turn of events, it’s not the outcome that anybody actually wanted. Will Jamie and Ian be looked down on for failing to handle their side of the deal?

Ian doesn’t have much time to think about that, though, as it’s clear that Jamie is going to stick with the mercenaries for now. That means Jamie needs a good sword of his own. I am surprised that Murtagh didn’t make sure that Jamie was left with a sword of his own when taking him to Ian and the mercenaries in the first place. I guess this shows just how fast this had to happen.

However, before Ian can talk to Jamie about this, he’s realized that Jamie has rushed forward toward the cabin. It looks like Jamie is in search for a certain woman in the tavern to prove that he’s not a Jew. Ian decides that he is going to have something to eat while he waits for his friend to prove that.

Is that the real reason why Jamie is marching so quickly into the tavern? We’ve seen Jamie act like this before, and it’s not usually for this reason. More of than not, he’s ready for a fight.

Could this section be used in a TV adaptation?

If Virgins was adapted into a TV series, I could see some of this section be used. We’d probably need Ian to speak out loud about Jamie needing a sword, as it doesn’t make sense for him to internalize that thought. We need to know what he’s thinking.

This would then allow for a humorous moment of Ian realizing that Jamie is no longer walking with him. The question then is how Ian is able to tell the audience where Jamie is going, although I guess that could be through a rude or funny comment as Jamie walks off.
