It’s time for Jamie and Ian to head back to see Dr. Hasdi in Virgins section 30. This is not going to be an easy conversation to have.

The two need to explain what happened with Rebekah, and how they didn’t manage to complete the job. There’s a beautiful connection to Jamie and Ian’s relationship in this section of the story.

Breaking down Virgins section 29

Ian and Jamie need to go see Dr. Hasdi, which means a trip back to Bordeaux. It’s not going to be an easy meeting, as they have failed to carry out the task at hand. They were supposed to deliver Rebekah and the Torah to her betrothed. What Hasdi didn’t realize is that Rebekah was already betrothed to another man, and she loved him.

I wouldn’t want to be the two men delivering this news, but I love that they don’t chicken out of it. They know what needs to be done, and Ian is even willing to do it all himself. Jamie isn’t going to let his friend do it, though.

As Jamie says “on your right, man,” we are reminded of the relationship that the two have had. When the two would train together, Ian was always told to stand on Jamie’s right by his dad. That was Jamie’s weakest side, as he was left-handed, and Ian’s dad didn’t try to force that out of him. Instead, it just made more sense to move Ian to Jamie’s weaker side, and that’s the way they were raised.

We get a reminder of that with this section. The two will always have each other’s backs.

Could this section be used in a TV adaptation?

In a way, we would need to see this section, because we would need to see Ian and Jamie getting ready to tell Dr. Hasdi about everything that has happened. However, it’s not all that necessary, especially the “on your right, man” part. After all, Outlander has already given us some of this part of Virgins with the flashback.

That being said, it would be great to have it. We need to see how Jamie and Ian’s friendship hasn’t changed despite everything they have been through. We’d need to see how Jamie has Ian’s back, despite this being a potentially scary moment, because the two have technically failed. It would be much easier for Jamie to stay out of the house, but he’s not going to let his friend and his brother handle this alone.
