Jamie and Ian are released from the wine cellar in Virgins section 27. Surprisingly, it’s so that they can attend the wedding of Rebekah and Pierre.
It initially seems odd that they are invited to attend the wedding, but then we start to get Pierre’s reasoning, and it all starts to make sense.
Breaking down Virgins section 28
Jamie and Ian have made it through a second bottle of wine, and they’re finally allowed out of the wine cellar. It’s evening now, and it turns out that they are going to attend the wedding to Rebekah and Pierre. It has to be done at night because they believe it will give them the best of luck.
The two men are introduced to two witnesses and the officiant. Pierre needs Jamie and Ian to go back to Dr. Hasdi to tell him that the wedding happened, and that everything was done legally and above board. This is to make sure that Hasdi can’t come back to annul the marriage. I’m getting some more feelings that this is so like Brian and Ellen’s marriage, and I would love for a comment about that from Jamie or Ian.
There are Jewish customs at the wedding, as we know that Rebekah connected with her Jewish roots when she went to live with her grandfather. I think the wedding sounds romantic and just right for the two of them. The fact that Rebekah put so much on the line to get to Pierre, I want to say that she does love him and that she wants to be with him.
With the marriage official, it’s time for Jamie to talk to Rebekah. While he can’t follow through with delivering Rebekah to the man Dr. Hasdi wanted her to marry, he can at least get the Torah back. After all, she no longer needs it for her dowry since the rug in the house was that years earlier. Of course, Rebekah doesn’t want to hand that over, but Jamie threatens to tell Pierre about Rebekah’s involvement in the Ephraim’s death. She quickly changes her mind.
Of course, Ian has to distract Pierre for Jamie to do this. What better way than to ask him about circumcision and whether it hurts?
Could this section be used in a TV adaptation?
We would definitely need to see this section used if Virgins is ever developed. It wraps up Rebekah’s story, as she gets married to the man that she loves. It’s important for Jamie and Ian to witness it, so that they can go back to Dr. Hasdi and make it clear everything is legal and official.
At the same time, we need to see Jamie get the Torah back. This was an expensive Torah, and it could help to settle things with Hasdi when Jamie and Ian get back there. So, yes, there’s no way around not using this section.
