With Jamie and Ian unable to see Rebekah, they find themselves trapped in a wine cellar in Virgins section 27. I guess there could be worse places to end up stuck.
The section sees Jamie and Ian think a few things through. They’re things I’ve already pondered in the previous chapter, but it makes sense to give the men a little more time.
Breaking down Virgins section 27
The section opens with Jamie and Ian in a wine cellar. That’s where they’ve been held while the current situation plays out. It’s clear that the Vicomte doesn’t want them to go off and tell anyone that Rebekah is here, since he is determined to marry his bride.
The two men discuss how long they could live on the wine that is in the cellar. It’s one of those pondering questions, as they think about spending their final days drunk wouldn’t be a bad thing. It’s better than many others would get.
While the open a bottle of wine to share, they end up discussing Rebekah and the whole situation leading up to this. Did she set the attacks? That would seem likely, especially with the two staged attacks. She would have wanted to get away with the Torah, and she would have wanted the money for her dowry as well.
After all, she needed to make sure she lived well with Pierre after they were married. There’s no doubt that her grandfather would have disowned her considering what he did to his own daughter.
Could this section be used in a TV adaptation?
While this is just a small part, I could see it being used if Virgins was ever adapted. It allows Jamie and Ian to discuss everything that has happened. After all, we’d be discussing it as viewers, so we need to see the characters come to the same conclusions as we have.
However, we could get away with not having this section. Instead, we could see Jamie and Ian discussing this when they’re on the road again. The benefit of this section is a bit of tension, as we don’t really know what Pierre is going to do with the two men once the wedding happens. So, I’m in two minds about this section being used.
