I feel for Rebekah in Virgins section 26. It’s clear that she is a victim of the time, being a woman, but that she is also in love with someone else.
Jamie and Ian get to the Vicomte Beaumont’s house, and they are surprised by what they learn. It turns out that Rebekah is already betrothed to someone else. Jamie and Ian may find themselves in a bit of trouble.
Breaking down Virgins section 26
Jamie and Ian make it to the house of Victome Beaumont, who is known as Pierre Robert Heriveaux d’Anton. He is quick to let the men in, but he also makes it clear that they cannot speak with Rebekah. It turns out that Rebekah is set to be his wife, and it doesn’t sound like she is being forced into that marriage.
The Victome explains that Rebekah’s mother ran away from home to marry a Christian man. That led to Dr. Hasdi to disown her, but after her death, he claimed Rebekah as his and welcomed her back into the house. However, her father had promised her to the Vicomte, and that was the promise for four years.
Of course, Dr. Hasdi didn’t agree with this, and he set up a marriage with a Jewish man. Rebekah seems to be focused on getting back to the man that she was previously betrothed to, so now it makes sense why she decided to run away. Taking the Torah would mean some money, as well.
The Victome was going to have Rebekah abducted as soon as he heard about the marriage. So, it sounds like the attacks on the road were by him.
I’m curious now as to whether Rebekah felt a duty to return to this man. Did the main set something up? It’s curious that the Vicomte won’t let Jamie and Ian see Rebekah.
Could this section be used in a TV adaptation?
We would need this section if Virgins was adapted. This continues the big plot of the story, as we learn a little more about Rebekah. I think it makes Rebekah a little more likable, as before it seemed like she was malicious against Jamie and Ian. Now it’s clear that she is following her heart, a privilege that she wouldn’t usually have in the time period.
There’s also the parallel of what Jamie’s mom did when she feel for Brian Fraser. I would love to see this parallel play out in a series.
