Jamie learns of the events from the night before in Virgins section 22. It leads to a discussion of what a sin really is.

Ian is honest about his time with Rebekah the night before, but he does lead Jamie to think that something more happened. After all, why wouldn’t Jamie think that Ian and Rebekah slept together when they left the room? Although there are a lot of unasked questions about Marie throughout this section.

Breaking down Virgins section 22

As Jamie wakes up, he finds Ian laying next to him. This allows Jamie to ask what happened the night before, and Ian explains that he and Rebekah kissed, and then they left the room. Ian didn’t think that it was appropriate for Rebekah to hear Jamie’s words in his hallucinating state.

Jamie immediately believes that Ian and Rebekah slept together, and he wonders what Rebekah’s fiancé will think of not having a virgin as a bride and is a little jealous of Ian. He also wonders to himself about where Marie was when Rebekah and Ian were in the women’s room.

Ian eventually explains — after a quick discussion about circumcision and how Jesus was circumcised — that he didn’t sleep with Rebekah. However, he wonders if her handling him with her hand is a sin. There are three parts to a sin, which includes knowing something is wrong and consenting to something that is wrong. Ian says that he expected more to happen, so he didn’t quite consent to the idea of what actually happened that night.

Well, Jamie still thinks that it’s a sin, and that Ian needs to confess to it. After that, he asks why the thoughts of circumcision come up, and Ian shares that he thought maybe he should marry Rebekah. However, he knows that his mom wouldn’t be too happy about this happening, and the two men end up lost in their own thoughts.

We end the section with Jamie finally asking if the sin would be worth going to hell for. Ian thinks so.

Could this section be used in a TV adaptation?

I would love to see this section of Virgins play out if there was ever a prequel story for Jamie. We would need to see how Jamie and Ian’s bond is strong, and how the two can have this sort of conversation. At the same time, we need to know what happened between Rebekah and Ian did the night before, as I think this delves more into the type of woman Rebekah is without really a discussion about it.

On top of that, we need Ian asking Jamie not to say anything to Jenny about this. It’s clear that he does think of Jenny, even though he doesn’t seem to want Jamie to know about it.
