Jamie thinks about his sister in Virgins section 17, leading to queries about what happened to her. It also leads to a fight with Ian.

I do love how Jamie and Ian have a brotherly bond that can’t be broken. They do fight, but they will always make up, and we get to see that clearly in this section.

Breaking down Virgins section 17

The section starts with Jamie and Ian making it to a quieter tavern, where a couple of the mercenaries are playing dice. Jamie starts to look around, and he sees how downtrodden the women look in here. He starts to wonder if the job of a prostitute is even worth it considering the way they look.

This leads to his thoughts of Jenny, though, as he fears what has become of her after the events before Fort William. We know that Jamie had been trying to protect Jenny’s honor, but the last thing he saw was Jenny taking him into the house, feeling like she had no choice. Well, what he doesn’t know just yet is that nothing happened between the two.

That being said, he believes that Black Jack Randall had his way with Jenny, and he doesn’t know how to tell Ian this. He does want Ian to go back to Jenny, though, and with this, Ian makes a comment that Jenny may not be worth it. Of course, this leads to a fight between the two men.

It’s a short one, though. They are best friends after all, and they know when to apologize to each other. Ian also admits that he wanted to do something to help the woman back at the other tavern. He is an honorable man, but he also knew that there was nothing that could be done.

Could this section be used in a TV adaptation?

I would like to see this chapter used if Virgins was adapted. The benefit of this is that we see the relationship that Ian and Jamie have. It’s a chance to see how deep their friendship is, so seeing Jamie’s temper when he returns to Lallybroch is clearly not that much of a surprise to him.

It’s also important to see that Ian is an honorable man. With this in mind, maybe the previous section would need to be shown. After all, without that scene, we wouldn’t get to this one.
