The initial focus of Virgins section 15 is on the new job for the mercenaries to do. However, it turns into something useful for Jamie Fraser.
Jamie hasn’t had his wounds looked at properly since leaving Fort William. Of course, we know the dangers of that now, but even Ian and others are likely to know that this could mean his health takes a turn. Fortunately, the next job involves a doctor.
Breaking down Virgins section 15
We get started with D’Eglise, Jamie, and Ian heading to the house of a Jewish doctor, who is amused by Jamie’s practiced Hebrew. I do like that he is also respectful that Jamie is trying, as not many people would have done back then. At least, not with Hebrew.
The house that they are in is lavish and there is incense burning. This incense is a little too much for Jamie, and he tries to hide his coughing fits when the doctor’s granddaughter, Rebekah is brought out to the men.
It turns out that the doctor has three items that he needs to be safely transported from Bordeaux to Paris, and he had heard of the mercenaries from the previous client. One item is his granddaughter, who is set to marry the son of a chief rabbi. The second item is a Spanish Torah, which will be her dowry. The last item is some money.
Naturally, he is worried that the wagon will be broken into like the last one was. The word about stolen items will travel fast, especially when it comes from a past client telling a possible client. However, it seems that even with the stolen rug, the past client is happy with the services.
Once the terms are worked out, the doctor takes Jamie to another room to see to his back. There is some scrubbing involved, but Jamie is more focused on the fact that Rebekah is there. He thinks of Rebekah as similar to someone he once met in Paris, and we can assume that it is Annalise. However, he realizes that Rebekah is a stronger woman than the previous one, and he is embarrassed that she sees everything he has been through.
To end the section, the doctor gives Jamie some medicine which should help both the fever and the nightmares. I love that Jamie gets some compassion from someone other than his family.
Could this section be adapted into a TV series?
We would definitely need to see this section of Virgins used if the short story was adapted into a TV series. This sets up the next job for the mercenaries, so we need to get the explanation of what the men are supposed to be doing.
This is also important to see just how bad Jamie’s back got. We know that it was terrible from Outlander, but we don’t get to know the full story of the healing. This is a chance to see how he got medical help, especially since it was clear he was running a fever and there was a high risk of infection.
