Outlander Book Club: Virgins section 11 breakdown

Jamie finds comfort in prayer in Virgins section 11. Here's our breakdown of the section.
Outlander season 1
Outlander season 1

As Jamie gets on with his day the next morning, he is plagued by memories in Virgins section 11. He has to find a way to break free of them.

This is an important chapter when it comes to showing the camaraderie of the men that he is with. These men don’t know Jamie, and yet, when he starts praying, they pray with him. It’s a beautiful way to show that he is part of their group now.

Breaking down Virgins section 11

The section starts with Jamie waking, with thoughts of Black Jack Randall on his mind. This leads to thoughts of the surgeon, who commented on the wounds that Randall caused to his back. These are all memories that happened at Fort William, and he ends up thinking about his dad, and the way his dad was shocked at the view of the wounds on his back.

Jamie had felt a bit of peace when his dad was there, but then he thought about Jenny, and the sacrifice that she made to save him. We know from Outlander that Jamie thought that Jenny had given herself over to Randall to protect him, but in the end, Randall couldn’t get it up. Jenny laughed at him, but Jamie had already been knocked out by that point. It wouldn’t be until much later that he would learn what really happened that day.

It’s a guilt that Jamie carries with him, and we see that in this chapter. He wants to break free from the memories of his sister, and the only way he can do that is by saying a prayer. Using his hands as a rosery, he starts the Hail Mary out loud.

This startles one of the guys next to him, but that guy joins in. Then the others start to joining in, and Jamie feels a peace with the wall of prayer as the men march forward.

Could this section be used in a TV adaptation?

I would love to see this section of Virgins used, but not because of the memories for Jamie. It’s more about the way the men are with him, even though they don’t know him. We need to see Jamie become part of this group, and I think that’s what this section really shows off.

It wouldn’t be hard to include it, either. Even if there was a need to keep this type of prequel series short, this section could be added in with others when the men are walking, as there is a lot of that in this short story!
