Roger and Buck made it through the stones in Outlander season 7, episode 9. They knew immediately they were in the past, but it turns out they’re not quite where they expected to be.

Noting that Bree wasn’t there and there was no road, Roger knew that he was no longer in 1980. That led to the assumption that they had landed in 1778. So, Buck headed to Inverness to see if Rob had taken Jemmy there to get on a boat to America, while Roger headed to Lallybroch to see if Jemmy had managed to escape and get to there.

It was at Lallybroch that Roger learned he wasn’t in 1778 at all. Jamie didn’t answer the door to Roger’s knocking. Instead, Brian Fraser was there.

Roger works out a potential year in Outlander season 7, episode 9

Roger quickly realizes that he has gone too far back in the past. For Brian Fraser to be at Lallybroch, it means that Roger has to have gone to a time before Jamie was held at Fort William.

When Roger is invited in, a younger Jenny Fraser appears. She hasn’t married Ian Murray yet. Brian notes that Ian is someone Jenny has her eye on, and it’s clear that Brian approves of this relationship. He is very clear that Jenny is not someone for Roger to stare at.

Roger quickly notes that he is a married man. He just wants to find his son, which means Brian relaxes a little and invites Roger to stay the night. They can search for Jemmy in the morning. Brian also opens up a little more about his family, letting Roger know that Jamie is away in France at university.

That allows Roger to work out a time period. He is in either 1739 or 1740. At this point, Roger doesn’t need to know much else. Getting an idea of the time period will just tell him which king is on the throne and whether Culloden has happened yet—it hasn’t!

When does Roger and Buck arrive in the Outlander books?

We get the exact year in the Outlander books. Roger has arrived in 1739.

This is much earlier than he expected, and Roger needs to understand why this is. We’re not giving away spoilers here, though! There is a clue in Outlander season 7, episode 9 that tells us why Roger is in the past. He’s after the ferryman that is mentioned, but is this ferryman the man Roger and Buck are actually looking for? Hopefully, this will be answered (at least to us) in the next episode.

Outlander airs on Fridays on STARZ.
