It’s time for Michael to reach Joan, but not before Master Raymond sees her in The Space Between Section 40. This is where the storylines all merge.

I love that we get to see all the main players in one scene. The race to find Joan is over, but there are a lot of questions about what Le Comte St. Germain wants. It’s clear that Joan was not the woman Master Raymond meant — and Master Raymond immediately knows that.

Breaking down The Space Between Section 40

While we start with Michael still racing through the tunnels to get to Joan — those were the footsteps Joan heard — we also see Le Comte St. Germain get to a point in the tunnel with Joan. There’s a pentagram on the floor, and in the middle stands Master Raymond.

Le Comte makes a comment that Joan isn’t the “lost child” Master Raymond was looking for, and I get a sense that Master Raymond knows this. He can see auras, and he knows all of his children. So, he would know those who aren’t his children. However, he’s amused, and he wants to know what Le Comte St. Germain wants with this girl.

I’m curious as well. Why does Le Comte still want Joan? He has worked out that she can’t hear the stones and she’s not Claire’s daughter. Or at least, he should have worked this out. Is he just so hellbent on revenge that he wants to believe that Claire would come racing to save Joan when she has no idea that Joan is here?

Michael steps out of the shadows to make it clear that Joan is his concern, and he notes to Joan that she dropped her rosary. I love that Michael gets the courage to step forward. It could be two against one in this scene, although I’m sure that Le Comte is the only one to worry about.

Could this section be used in a TV adaptation?

Like so many others, if The Space Between was adapted for TV, we would need to see this chapter. It brings so much of the story to a dramatic point. We see everyone together, and it’s time to get a few answers. I would also love to see more of the dynamic between Le Comte St. Germain and Master Raymond.

Something that would be great is to see Joan’s reaction to the pentagram on the ground. She would view it as a mark of the devil, but it’s really not. It’s a pagan symbol of protection, but this symbol could end up scaring her more. I don't feel like the section focuses on everyone's reaction within this scene, and the TV show would have a better chance to do that.
